How much do registrars pay for a domain?

If I (or my company) want to buy 1000 domains or more maybe it makes sense to become one instead of paying a registrar or a reseller?

  1. isp's pay appx $7.00 or less for the domain. you can't become a registrar, lol but don't buy a domain at network solutions, there you will pay min $35.00. go to CNS for the domain, they are the cheapest as they don't make any profit of it...
  2. I doubt you want to be a registrar. You have to get ICANN accreditation and then pay a fixed fee of US$4,000 plus a per-registrar variable fee totaling US$3.8 million divided among all registrars every year. You then do not pay for domains but are responsible for doling them out for the region you have accreditation for. Resellers buy in bulk from registrars, but buy far more than 1000 domains. Basically reseller get domains cheap because they automate the whole admin process. You are likely to have very large setup fees to be a reseller too, and will have to put a hell of a lot of IT in place. If you want 1000 domain names (why?) just go to a cheap reseller like UKREG in the UK.
