How do registrars work in department stores?

Hey everyone, I was wondering what you have to do when you are an employee and work at the register...how does the machine/computer work? It is really hard to do?

  1. I wouldn't have said it was too hard no. These days most things have a bar code to scan to register the item name and price. When you get the money for the item the register will work out what change (if any) needs to be given. Plastic cards are just swiped and some require a signature. I'd say just very basic maths to count any cash you're given and need to enter into the register and a nice personality makes all the difference!
  2. The POS software on registers vary from store to store depending on needs, but in general you'll do the same thing for any register: + Begin a new sales receipt (usually automatic after the last one is done) + Scan items to be purchased + Add or change any special items + Add in the effects of any coupons or sales + Finalize the receipt (price added up) + Select the method of payment that the customer is using + Give them their change and receipt There can also be special cases, such as if you accidentally add an extra item or get an item with no pricetag/barcode. It sounds like a lot, but it usually comes down to making a few button presses and swiping stuff. Department stores are fairly easy, as you can scan the item rather than manually selecting it (as in restaurants). Most stores will offer on-the-job training during your first week, so it's not a huge worry. The job is not particularly hard as long as you work quickly and accurately.
